Special Situations, as an event-driven strategy, doesn't often make the news, but this strategy is not to be overlooked. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Oaktree Capital Management has raised over $3B for their third Special Situations fund. This one - like many event-driven strategies - invests in businesses that are struggling in North America. The fund will invest in a mix of industries such as consumer products, gaming, healthcare, media/entertainment, and more.
Matthew Wilson, who is the managing director and co-portfolio manager of the Special Situations group, is absolutely stoked with the fundraising efforts and the trust placed in the team (and in the investment philosophy) by returning investors as well as new ones.
As of September 30, 2023, Oaktree's Special Situations unit manages a whopping $7.1bn of assets. Faith in event-driven strategies is growing at an incredibly fast rate. Exciting times are ahead for this investment niche.
